Dear Josephine,
I’m writing this a couple days before you officially become four months old. So much has happened since you came into the world and it is hard to believe how quickly you are changing.
You continue to enjoy some of the same games and toys you have been starting to play with. But the biggest difference now is that you are starting to get a sense for your hands and fingers and you are learning how to touch and grab things. You like playing with different textures. You especially like putting your fingers in your mouth and you have started to do a lot of babbling. My favorite is when you make excited little screams when you are happy and playing with me and your mom.
I caught a cold and was sick for over a week. You got sick too. It’s unclear if I got you sick or if you got me sick, but either way, I felt really bad about it and we were worried about you. You had a bit of a fever and a rash on your cheeks and you got a little bit fussy. But you pulled through it after just two or three days so we were relieved when you were feeling better.
Another big milestone for you was your sleeping. Up until recently, you had been sleeping in a bassinet in our bedroom and whenever you would cry in the middle of the night, you would get fed. We moved you into your nursery now in your crib. This is so you can learn how to sleep through the night. Lately you have been sleeping for about twelve hours a night without getting up very much or making a fuss at all. I’m proud of you!
We were looking forward to taking you on a trip to Montreal for your first vacation. We were going to see the Boston Bruins play the Montreal Canadiens. It’s been a bucket list item of mine to see them play in Montreal, so I was looking forward to doing that with you. We ended up canceling because you had not started sleep training yet and we thought there was too much risk involved. I think it’s a good thing. Now you and I can go sometime when you are old enough to remember it. I’ll look forward to that.
We enjoy giving you different nicknames. I’ve been calling you The Great Baby since you were born. Me and your mom love this Kevin Hart skit about a great baby so I guess it just kind of stuck. I also like calling you the Josie Bean. Oftentimes I’ll change the lyrics to a lot of the children’s songs you listen to with my own little remix about the Josie Bean. You smile a lot when I sing to you and that makes me so happy.
But the best time of day for you is still bath time. I should reiterate how amazing your mom is. Even in a simple daily task like bath time, she treats you like a little princess. You get a little exfoliating scalp massage, various combs and brushes, lotions, and even some baby Coldplay songs to soothe you before going to bed. She really goes above and beyond with every detail and goes out of her way to give you the best experience. I really love watching you kick and splash and smile or even some of the more pensive moments when you sit there with your fingers in your mouth.
There’s still a lot ahead we are looking forward to. You’ve begun going to music class and you like hearing new sounds. Soon you will be in the care of a nanny during the day when your mom goes back to work. I’ve been working the last couple months so most of my dedicated time with you is between work and bathtime, and of course on the weekends. I think we have been forming a special bond. I’m always a little sad if you don’t smile back at me here and there. Fortunately you seem to be a relatively happy baby and it doesn’t happen too often.
I love watching your personality develop. I’m eager to see what you will become. I’m looking forward to us doing more things together, like your first Easter next weekend, music classes, and maybe even going for some runs together when the weather gets nicer. Until then, keep dreaming big.
I love you so much that sometimes I even dream about you and worry about losing you.
I’ll talk to you soon.
Love,
Dad
